Fatwa No. ( 15400 )
Q: We noticed during our visit to Uganda that there are some Christians who bring their children to a shelter for new Muslims, so that they may become Muslim. When they were asked: Why did you not become Muslim yourselves? These fathers answered: They are afraid of circumcision . What is your opinion, Your Eminence, on this?
A: It is not necessary to demand that they undergo circumcision if they fear it; because it is a recommended practice (sunnah) and not obligatory according to the majority, and whoever said it is obligatory conditioned it on safety
from fear for the one being circumcised. And if that prevents them from entering Islam, they are not to be demanded to do it at the time of entering Islam, and when Islam becomes settled in their hearts, they can look into it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
