Equality in quantity when selling gold for its kind with immediate exchange in the session
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19797 )
Q: I have old gold, which I took to the goldsmith with the intention of having new bracelets made. He said he would melt it, re-manufacture it, and take only the cost of the work, i.e., his labor. Knowing that the old gold, when
the goldsmith melts it, loses approximately (2 g to 3 g), and consequently the newly made bracelets weigh less than the gold I gave him. Please inform me of the answer, may Allah reward you.
A: If the goldsmith will work your gold into jewelry according to your request and take a fee for his labor, there is nothing wrong with that. However, if he will make the requested jewelry for you from gold other than your own, and take your gold in exchange along with the fee, this is not permissible; because equality in quantity is required when gold is sold for its kind, with immediate exchange in the session.
