Fatwa No. ( 3470 )
Q: My father passed away, and he had several sons. He left behind nothing of the perishable things of this world, and he bequeathed to all his sons that they perform Hajj on his behalf and offer a sacrifice on his behalf without exception. I ask for your guidance: Is this obligatory, or is it a form of filial piety that each son performs according to his ability? My mother also passed away, and I am unable to fulfill her bequest, but she, (may Allah have mercy on her), before her illness and death, asked her sons for the following: Hajj on her behalf from her sons and a sacrifice on her behalf. She did not leave behind anything of the perishable things of this world. I ask for your kindness: Is all of this obligatory, or is it a form of filial piety that a son performs for his mother according to his ability?
A: It is recommended for you to perform Hajj on behalf of your father and your mother to the extent of your ability, and to perform 'Umrah on their behalf. It is not obligatory for each of them, but it is
a form of filial piety and a type of good through which you show kindness to your parents and do them good. Likewise, the sacrifice on their behalf is a type of charity and filial piety that you offer to them, and it is not obligatory for you on their behalf. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
