Exchanging dirhams for dirhams

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 5754 )
Q: A Muslim came to me and said: Please lend me a sum of three thousand riyals. I asked him: How much do you want it for? He said: I do not know. We agreed on 5,500 riyals, to be paid in installments over one year, 2,750 every six months. He took it in cash, and I was ignorant that it was exchanging money for money, i.e., dirhams for dirhams, and when I presented the matter to a friend of mine, he said: It is forbidden. What is the ruling on this?
A : This is the forbidden riba (usury or interest). Allah the Exalted said:
But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interestوَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:275]
, and take only your principal of three thousand from your partner. If you have received the entire amount, you must return the excess to him if it is feasible; otherwise, give it in charity to the poor or in other avenues of righteousness.
