Q: A man knows nothing about the prohibition of riba (usury or interest), or he knows but is not committed to the teachings of Islam. Then he learned and became committed, but he had in his possession a sum of interest he had taken from the bank. What is the best way to get rid of this interest that is in his possession, given that he will not deposit any amount in the bank anymore? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good for us and for the Muslims.
A: It is obligatory for him to give in charity to the poor and the needy the money he obtained from the bank as profits while he was unaware.
