The first question of Fatwa No. ( 11751 )
Q1: In it, a woman found some coins in a place devoid of inhabitants. The value of the coins was ninety silver riyals at the time silver was in circulation. After she found those coins, their shepherd came asking about them, but she did not inform him, despite the fact that she was in dire need of them at that time and was mostly ignorant of the ruling. Now, please advise us, may Allah reward you with good: how does she dispose of this amount, and to whom should it be given? And does she pay in paper currency or the value of the silver coins, since silver coins are no longer available? This is what we ask of you, may Allah preserve and protect you.

A1: It is obligatory for the woman mentioned to hand over the silver riyals or their equivalent, after assessing their value, to their owner if he is found. If he is not found, she pays it to his heirs. She must also repent and seek forgiveness from Allah for what she did.
