The agent is bound by the instructions of the principal

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 20057 )
Q2: In Ramadan, one of the people of good gave me a sum of money and said, “Distribute it among the poor, as you know them better than I do.” I distributed some of it to them, but I disposed of the rest by purchasing some food from the market and distributing it to them instead of the money, because they were unable to purchase from the market. Also, there may be someone in the household who takes the money without the consent of the needy family members. Is it permissible for me to act in this manner or not? We are in villages. May Allah guide you and preserve you.
A2: It is obligatory for you to adhere to the instructions given to you by your principal, which is to distribute the money to the poor and not to purchase anything for them with it; because you were not appointed to do so. You must compensate for what you disposed of and give it to the poor, in order to carry out the principal’s order and to clear your conscience. And you will have, if Allah wills, the reward for what you have offered. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
