Leaving the i'tikaf

Fatwa number ( 7886 )
Q: I am a resident of Kuwait , and I was in i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. When I learned that the sighting of the crescent moon had been confirmed in Saudi Arabia and other countries, I broke my i'tikaf and went to my house, and I had intercourse with my wife and broke my fast; because I thought that day was from Shawwal, and it is not permissible to fast on it. What is the legal ruling in this matter for me and my wife? Please give us a ruling, may you be rewarded, with the evidence for it.
A: You were correct in breaking your fast on Friday and in leaving your i'tikaf; because it was the day of 'Id al-Fitr due to the confirmation of the sighting of the Shawwal crescent on the night of Friday. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1081b the hadith. And if the number of days you fasted from Ramadan was twenty-eight days, then fast one day as qada' (making up a missed act of worship) so that your fasting becomes twenty-nine days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
