Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 12305 )
Q: My father and mother fast three days every month, as well as Monday and Thursday. They wish to do good by doing so. It has come to their attention that fasting on these days is not permissible. We ask you, may Allah have mercy on you and reward you with all good, to issue a ruling on this matter.
She was informed that fasting on these days is not permissible. We ask you, may Allah have mercy on you and reward you with all good, to issue a ruling on this matter.

A:It is prescribed to fast on Monday and Thursday, asAbu Dawudnarrated fromUsamah ibn Zayd(may Allah be pleased with them both): (That the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, and when he was asked about that, he said:
The works of the servants (of Allah) are presented (to Allah) on Monday and Thursday.إن أعمال الناس تعرض يوم الإثنين ويوم الخميس
Sunan Abi Dawud 2436Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and in another wording:
and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.فأحب أن يعرض عملي وأنا صائم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 747Hasan (Darussalam)
, so the hadith indicates that fasting on Monday and Thursday is permissible, and that it is part of the Sunnah, just as fasting three days of every month is also a Sunnah, as the authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) confirm this. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
