Q: We inform Your Eminence that we have amounts belonging to unidentified individuals. We do not have their addresses or phone numbers, only their names. It has been 5 to 10 years, and no one has contacted us to claim them. We transfer them from one ledger to another every year. We have despaired of their contacting us or our being able to reach them. Therefore, we would like to seek Your Eminence’s ruling on these amounts and what method can be used to handle them?
A: If the situation is as described, namely that you do not know their addresses or phone numbers, and you only know their names, then determine the amount belonging to each of them, and then give charity on their behalf. If one of them comes to you, inform them of what you did. If he is satisfied with that, praise be to Allah. If he demands his right, give it to him, and you will have the reward and your liability will be cleared. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
