Q: My father passed away while he was an employee at the Aramco company, and he had
savings with the company, where 10% was deducted from his salary. After his death, the company informed us of the following amounts resulting from the profits on this amount that was deducted from his salary: the amount that was deducted became: 215,065.49; a reward was paid to him by the company in exchange for saving this amount, which was: 215,065.49; the profit on the first amount: 222,100.47, i.e., the savings profits; and the profit on the second amount: 201,504.78, i.e., the reward profits. The question: Are these amounts lawful for us, his heirs, or not? If they are lawful, praise be to Allah. If they are not lawful for us, what do you suggest we do with them? And if they are not lawful, is it permissible for us to use them to pay off debts owed by our deceased uncle, who has small children and no one to pay them on his behalf? And do we have the right to give them to his relatives whom he loved in his lifetime, other than the legal heirs? And is it permissible for us to build a mosque or a charitable project with them, the reward of which would return to the deceased? Also, there is an amount of 3.4 million and four hundred thousand Lebanese pounds working in the bank; what should we do with its profits? May Allah reward you with good.
A : What was deducted from your father’s salary, you may take it, and it is lawful for you; its ruling is the ruling of the rest of the estate. As for the profits, they are to be spent on avenues of righteousness and good deeds.
