Q: During my training at one of the institutes in Pakistan , I found that one of the students was named Abdul-Rasul, so I would address him as Abdul-Rabb al-Rasul. One of them said to me: Is this not permissible? I told him that it is shirk (associating partners with Allah) and that worship is for Allah alone. He then mentioned to me the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Az-Zumar 39:53] , and he said: Allah commanded Muhammad to say: "O My servants," so what
is the answer of your eminence?
A: First: What you did in changing the student's name from Abdul-Rasul to Abdul-Rabb al-Rasul is obligatory, and it is the requirement of what the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) brought regarding the protection of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and directing people to what they were created for, which is the worship of Allah alone, and that they are all His servants alone. Allah the Exalted said:[Maryam 19:93] . The scholars have agreed on the prohibition of every name that is worshipped other than Allah. We have attached for you a copy of the book Fath al-Majid to review the topic in the chapter on the saying of Allah the Exalted: verse, and the chapter on the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:22] verse. Second: As for the noble verse, the answer regarding it, according to all the people of tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), is that its meaning is: the command for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to convey to people the saying of Allah Mighty and Majestic: [Az-Zumar 39:53] verse, and so on with its counterparts.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
