The Wife’s Donation of the ‘Aqiqah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 7365 )
Q2: My father is wealthy and has livestock. My mother had a goat, and he asked for it to perform the ‘aqiqah for me and for my siblings’ purification,
saying: “Give me the goat so we can sell it or slaughter it as the ‘aqiqah for Sa‘id and the boys.” He did not slaughter that goat. When she saw that he was insistent on taking the goat, she said: “Performing it as the ‘aqiqah is better than selling it.” There was a kind of coercion involved. The ‘aqiqah was performed after five months, and likewise for some of my siblings? My question: Is what my father did sufficient, or not? And is it permissible for me to perform it if something remains due from that?
A2: That goat suffices as the ‘aqiqah for you, and you are not required to slaughter another; because it is a recommended practice (sunnah) for the father, not for you, and he has performed part of it. It is prescribed for him to slaughter a second one if he is able; because the recommended practice for the ‘aqiqah is to slaughter two for a male and one for a female. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
