What is the ruling on the 'aqiqah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The first message in this episode is from listener Muhammad ... ibn Ibrahim Bary from Guinea Conakry. He has a number of questions, one of which asks: What is the ruling on the 'aqiqah?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The 'aqiqah is the sacrificial animal slaughtered for the newborn on the seventh day of his birth. It is called 'aqiqah, and it is also called nasiqah. Some people call it tamimah. It consists of two animals for a male child and one for a female child, from sheep. What is sufficient for the 'udhiyah is sufficient for it, meaning: a one-year-old sheep or a two-year-old goat, or older. This is what is called the 'aqiqah. It is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah); because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it. He commanded that two sheep be slaughtered for a boy and one sheep for a girl, and he said:
Every boy is pawned against his 'Aqiqah, to be slaughtered on his behalf on the seventh day of his birth, his head is to be shaved, and he must be given a name.كل غلام مرتهن بعقيقته تذبح عنه يوم سابعه ويحلق ويسمى
Bulugh al-Maram 12:44
.
The recommended practice (sunnah) is for the father of the child to slaughter two animals for his young son if he is male, and one for a daughter, on the seventh day. If it is not possible to slaughter them then, it is done afterwards, on the fourteenth or the twenty-first, as is narrated from 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), or on another day. There is no fixed limit after the seventh day. If the seventh day is possible, it is better. The head of the male child is shaved and he is given a name. If he was named at birth, there is no harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named some of the children of the Ansar on the day of their birth, and he named his son Ibrahim on the day of his birth. If he is named on the seventh day, that is also a recommended practice (sunnah).
As for the 'aqiqah and shaving, it is done on the seventh day. The head of the male child is shaved, but not the female. If it is slaughtered after that, by a month or two months, a year, or more, there is no harm in all of this. The recommended practice (sunnah) is to eat from it, feed others from it, and give charity from it. If he gathers his neighbors and relatives around it, or gives it all as charity, there is no harm. All of this is good. There is no fixed limit in it, praise be to Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it and did not say: "Do such and such with it." This indicates leniency. Whether he eats from it, saves some of it, feeds his neighbors, or gives it all as charity, it is fine. But the best is to give some of it as charity. If he distributes it all, or gathers the neighbors, relatives, and friends around it, it is all good. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
