Question 5 from Fatwa No. ( 5179 )
Q5: Did the command regarding sacrificial animals come in an explicit text of the Noble Qur'an, and in which verse did it come?
A5: It is narrated from Qatadah , 'Ata , and 'Ikrimah that the meaning of prayer and slaughter in the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Kawthar 108:1-2] is the festival prayer and the slaughter of the sacrificial animal. The correct view is: that the meaning of that is: Allah the Exalted commanded His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to make his prayer—whether obligatory or voluntary—and his slaughter and butchering pure for Allah alone, with no partner for Him, as in His saying to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): [Al-An'am 6:162-163]. As for the Sunnah of the sacrificial animal, it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in both speech and action. It is not necessary that every ruling be detailed in the Qur'an; rather, it is sufficient for a ruling that it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Hashr 59:7]
, and His saying the Exalted:[An-Nahl 16:44], and His saying the Sublime: [An-Nisa 4:80] ... up to similar verses. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

A5: It is narrated from Qatadah , 'Ata , and 'Ikrimah that the meaning of prayer and slaughter in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. (2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ (1) فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ(162) Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from
وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا, and His saying the Exalted:
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them
وَأَنْـزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُـزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْHe who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ
