Ascending Mount al-Nur

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 5303 )
Q: Accidents occur in which some pilgrims fall while ascending Mount al-Nur and descending from the cave. Some people propose building a staircase leading to the site of the cave, with all sides enclosed by iron mesh to prevent anyone from entering except through the designated path for ascending and descending.
A: Ascending to the aforementioned cave is not among the rituals of Hajj, nor is it among the recommended practices of Islam; rather, it is a religious innovation and a means to associating partners with Allah. Therefore, people should be prevented from ascending to it, and no staircase should be built for it, nor should the ascent be made easy; in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
, which is agreed upon as authentic. More than fourteen centuries have passed since the beginning of the revelation and the emergence of Islam, and we have not known of any of the successors of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor any of his Companions, nor any of the leaders of the Muslims who were in charge of the sacred sites during the past eras, who did so. All good lies in following them and proceeding on their path; as a service to Allah the Exalted,
and in accordance with the methodology of his Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and to block the means to associating partners with Allah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
