A Muslim Woman Going to the Mosque

Fatwa No. ( 873 )
Q: A man was born a Christian, then he entered Islam, and his wife also became Muslim. On one of the Fridays, when he took his wife with him to the mosque, he was told that it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to enter the mosques. So he went to the imam of the mosque and asked him: Why is it not permissible for a Muslim lady to enter the mosque? The imam answered that ladies are not all pure, and that even the Muslim women in Makkah al-Mukarramah do not enter the mosques and it is not allowed for them. He said: So I mentioned to the imam Surah No. 62, "Surah al-Jumu'ah," verse No. 8:[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]. He asks whether this is correct, and that it is from the core of Islam. He mentions that Christian women go to the church for worship, and why is the Muslim woman forbidden from entering the mosques? He requests the kindness of an answer to enlighten the Muslims.
A10: It is permissible for a Muslim woman to pray in the mosques, and her husband has no right to prevent her from doing so if she seeks his permission, as long as she is covered and nothing of her body is exposed that is forbidden for non-mahram men to look at; for what was narrated by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 442d, and in another narration: , both narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. If she is uncovered and something of her body is exposed that is forbidden for non-mahram men to look at, or if she is wearing perfume, then it is not permissible for her to go out of her house in this state, let alone go out to the mosques and pray in them; for there is fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) in that. Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nur 24:31]. And He said: [Al-Ahzab 33:59]. And it is established that Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah used to report from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sahih Muslim 443a, and in another narration: Sahih Muslim 443b, both narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. And it is established in authentic hadiths that the women of the Companions used to attend
the Fajr prayer in congregation, wrapped in their cloaks, so that no one among the people recognized them. And it is established that 'Umarah bint 'Abd al-Rahman said: I heard 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) say:Sahih Muslim 445a, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. These texts clearly indicate that if a Muslim woman adheres to the etiquettes of Islam in her clothing and avoids what incites fitnah and attracts the souls of those weak in faith from types of enticing adornment, she is not prevented from praying in the mosques. And if she is in a state that entices the people of evil and tempts those in whose hearts is doubt, she is prevented from entering the mosques, and indeed she is prevented from going out of her house and attending public gatherings. As for what was mentioned about the women of Makkah regarding not being allowed to enter the mosques, that is incorrect. Rather, they are allowed to enter al-Masjid al-Haram and pray in it in congregation, except that it is considered that they sit in specific areas so that they do not mix with the men in prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade
A10: It is permissible for a Muslim woman to pray in the mosques, and her husband has no right to prevent her from doing so if she seeks his permission, as long as she is covered and nothing of her body is exposed that is forbidden for non-mahram men to look at; for what was narrated by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When your women seek your permission for going to the mosque, you grant them (permission).
Do not prevent your women from their share of the mosques if they ask your permission. So Bilal – he was the son of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar – said: By Allah, we will prevent them. So 'Abdullah said to him: I am telling you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said so, and you are saying: We will prevent them
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
When any one of you (women) participates in the 'Isha' prayer, she should not perfume herself that night.
When any one of you comes to the mosque, she should not apply perfume.
إذا شهدت إحداكن المسجد فلا تمس طيبًاthe Fajr prayer in congregation, wrapped in their cloaks, so that no one among the people recognized them. And it is established that 'Umarah bint 'Abd al-Rahman said: I heard 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) say:
If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had seen what new things the women have introduced (in their way of life) he would have definitely prevented them from going to the mosque, as the women of BaniIsra'il were prevented.
