Real Estate Intended for Residence and Rental

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 4002 )
Q1: My husband and I bought a residence last year in Egypt . We live in part of it and rent out the rest to tenants. Is zakat due on the rental income, or on the value of the residence itself?
A1: Zakat is obligatory on the rental income if a lunar year has passed over it. If you spend it before the completion of the lunar year, you owe nothing. As for the building itself, there is no zakat on it because it is not intended for sale, but rather for residence and letting.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
