A Woman’s Ignorance of the Rulings of Islam
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1790 )
Q: An elderly woman, sixty years old, was ignorant of the rulings of menstruation for many years regarding the duration of her menses. She did not make up the fasts of Ramadan, believing that they do not need to be made up, based on what she heard from the general public.
A: She must repent to Allah for this, because she did not ask the people of knowledge. In addition to that, she must make up the fasts. She should make up the fasting she left off according to her predominant estimate of the number of days, and she must expiate for each day she left by feeding a poor person half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, or the like of the local staple food, if she is able to feed. If she is unable to feed, it is dropped from her, and making up the fasts is sufficient for her.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
