I have small children who urinate on the mattresses, but over time this urine dries up and leaves no trace.

The questioner : A woman asks: "Shaykh, I have small children who urinate on the mattresses, but over time this urine dries up and leaves no trace. Is it permissible for a person in a state of wudu' to step on these mattresses?"

The Shaykh : Yes, stepping on an impure mattress does not cause harm or have an effect if the mattress is not wet and the foot is not wet. Among the principles known to the common people, which is a correct principle, they say: "Impurity between two dry things". Pay attention to this governing example; this is a jurisprudential rule: impurity between two dry things. This means: if two dry things come into contact, one does not make the other impure. However, if the foot is wet and the place is impure, it is obligatory to wash the foot afterwards. But I advise our brothers, may Allah bless them: if impurity affects the mattress, they should hasten to wash it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so, meaning he would hasten to wash the impurity.
And when a young boy was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he sat him on his lap. The boy urinated on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) lap, so he ordered water to be brought and poured after his urine. ولما جيء بصبي إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أقعده في حجره، فبال الصبي في حجر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأمر بماء فأتبعه بوله
. This means: pouring water over the urine of a young boy without washing or rubbing, because the urine of a male child who has not eaten food and is only fed on milk is light in impurity. It is sufficient to pour water over it that covers it, without rubbing or washing.
So I say: it is recommended that when one of the children urinates on the mattress, we should hasten to wash it. But how do we wash it if it is stuck to the ground, like these large mattresses? We say: First, we take a sponge and suck up the urine until it dries, then we pour water over the urine two or three times, and thereby it becomes pure.
As for the small children, what is the original state of the small child, impurity or purity? The original state is purity. Even if they come out of the bathroom, they are pure, meaning their feet are pure. Because the bathroom, yes, because is the impurity in the bathroom in the entire bathroom or in the place designated for it? Answer? In the place designated for it. The basin and the rest of the parts of the bathroom are pure. The basin is also pure if water is poured into it and the impurity is removed. Yes.
