Making up Ramadan in light of the difference in moon sightings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 3127 )
Q: I underwent a surgical operation during the month of Ramadan, and now I want to make up the fasts, knowing that the Muslims in my city are divided into two groups: the first group broke their fast following Saudi Arabia and some other Islamic countries (i.e., 29 days). The second group completed the month (i.e., 30 days), following Algeria , with the note that Algeria determines the beginning and end of the lunar months by astronomical calculation. The question is: How many days do I make up, 29 or 30?
A1: Astronomical calculation is not considered a basis for establishing the beginning or end of the fasting month of Ramadan; rather, the valid criterion for this is the sighting of the crescent moon. If they do not see the crescent of Ramadan on the night of the thirtieth of Sha'ban, they complete Sha'ban as thirty days from the date of the sighting of the first day of the month. Likewise, if they do not see the crescent of Shawwal on the night of the thirtieth of Ramadan, they complete the count of Ramadan as thirty days. Accordingly, it is obligatory for you to fast 29 days to make up for the Ramadan you were unable to fast due to the operation, following the countries that fasted upon its sighting and broke their fast upon it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
