Zakat on Grapes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 9884 )
Q1: I have grapevines for which I bear all the costs that any farmer bears for his farm, such as irrigation, fertilizer, firewood, and labor, etc. Is there zakah due on the grape harvest, given that we sell it fresh in the market without drying it? If zakah is due on the harvest, how and when is it paid? Is it paid from the fruit itself, or is it paid in cash? And what is the rate in both cases, or in the correct case?
A1: If the grapes reach the nisab, which is five wasqs, then zakah becomes obligatory on them. One must pay out half of the tenth from the grapes. If he sells them, he pays out half of the tenth from the sale price. This applies if the irrigation is costly, such as irrigation by machines, canals, or sprinklers. However, if the irrigation is without cost, such as irrigation by rain or rivers, then the obligatory amount is the full tenth. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
