The gathering upon the passage of forty days after the death of the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 6167 )
Q3: People in Egypt in particular hold gatherings for the fortieth day of the deceased
- that is, after forty days have passed since his death - and it is known that this is a Pharaonic innovation, but the important thing is that the people (the family of the deceased) gather the shaykhs - the reciters - or some of them to recite the entire Qur'an, and this is called - the khatmah - and finally they eat whatever good food is provided and take a large fee from the family of the deceased, and the people also do the same for the one-year anniversary of the deceased. What is the correct opinion regarding this recitation, does it reach the deceased, what is the ruling on taking a fee for it, is this money invalid, and what is the ruling on taking a fee for reciting the Qur'an in general?

A3: The gathering upon the passage of forty days after the death of the deceased is an innovation, and reciting the Qur'an or what is called the khatmah for the deceased is a second innovation, and the eating by these reciters of the food provided to them and their taking a fee for the recitation is forbidden, and likewise reviving the one-year anniversary of the deceased with such acts is forbidden, and it is not permissible to take a fee merely for reciting the Qur'an; because its recitation is pure worship, so all these acts and taking a fee for them are not permissible, whereas taking a fee for teaching the Qur'an and for ruqyah (healing by Qur'anic recitation) with it is permissible. The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned the consensus of the scholars that taking a fee for mere recitation is forbidden according to all scholars, with no disagreement among them on that.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
