The questioner : Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an after the burial of the deceased in the deceased's house or in any place, and to gather for the recitation, or is it not?

The Shaykh : Gathering for recitation after the burial of the deceased, whether in the deceased's house, in the mosque, or in another man's house, is a religious innovation (bid'ah). The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not do this. In fact, the gathering of the deceased's family to receive condolences is disliked (makruh) according to the scholars.
If this is accompanied by bringing slaughtered animals and feasts and gathering over them, it falls under the category of wailing (niyaha). Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding it: "They considered gathering with the deceased's family and preparing food to be part of the wailing".
Therefore, we warn our brothers against engaging in these things, and to follow the methodology of the righteous Salaf in their condolences, where one would offer condolences whenever he found the person, and none of the righteous Salaf would open their doors to those who came from the far corners of the land. In fact, they might come from other lands and endure hardships, such that if one of them failed to do so, people would consider him to have cut off family ties or count him among those who are indifferent to these matters.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
