Q: I arrived in Makkah al-Mukarramah on the 7th of 12, 1400 AH, with the intention of performing 'Umrah and Hajj. Between the two prayers of Zuhr and 'Asr, I entered the Haram to perform tawaf and sa'y. During the rounds of sa'y, the adhan and iqamah for the 'Asr prayer were called, and I had not yet prayed Zuhr, intending to combine the two prayers and shorten them. The Muslims faced the qiblah and began the prayer, and I was among them. At that time, my time and location did not allow me to perform the prayer in the proper order as it should be, and I expected that I would not find an opportunity or any place to pray, even outside the Haram. So I intended to pray with the congregation: two rak'ahs for Zuhr and two rak'ahs for 'Asr. However, after I finished the rounds of sa'y, I went outside the Haram and prayed on the sidewalk, combining and shortening the prayer. Please inform me, may Allah reward you with good, about the ruling on my prayer during sa'y. Knowing that I was not given the opportunity to leave sa'y in order to perform my prayer in the order as is known, which is to perform the first obligatory prayer and then the next.
A: The default is that the prayers are performed in order. Also, it is prescribed for the traveler, if he prays behind a resident, to complete the prayer with him as four rak'ahs. So your first action of praying four rak'ahs with the imam, intending that two of them are for Zuhr and two for 'Asr, is not valid. You owe nothing for repeating those two prayers afterwards in order; rather, you succeeded in doing what is correct. It would have been better for you, in the tight situation you described, to pray with the imam
and intend it as the Zuhr prayer, then perform the 'Asr prayer shortened afterwards. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
