The Tawruk: Obligatory or Recommended Practice

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The tenth question of Fatwa No. ( 7632 )
Q10: Is the tawruk obligatory or a recommended practice, and is it in all prayers or only in those that are not two-unit?
A10: Evidence has been transmitted indicating the manner of sitting in the first tashahhud, between the two prostrations, and the manner of the tawruk. Among this is the hadith of Wail ibn Hujr that he
He saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying, so he prostrated, then sat down and spread out his left legرأى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي فسجد ثم قعد فافترش رجله اليسرى
. It was narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i, and in a wording by Sa'id ibn Mansur he said:
I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he sat down and recited the tashahhud, he spread his left foot on the ground and sat on itصليت خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلما قعد وتشهد فرش قدمه اليسرى على الأرض فجلس عليها
, and the hadith of Rifa'ah ibn Rafi' that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Bedouin:
When you prostrate, settle your prostration, and when you sit, sit on your left footإذا سجدت فمكن لسجودك فإذا جلست فاجلس على رجلك اليسرى
It was narrated by Ahmad, and the hadith of Abu Humaid in which it came:
And when he sat in the two units, he sat on his left leg and raised his right one, and when he sat in the final unit, he brought forward his left leg and raised the other and sat on his buttocksفإذا جلس في الركعتين جلس على رجله اليسرى ونصب اليمنى فإذا جلس في الركعة الأخيرة قدم رجله اليسرى ونصب الأخرى وقعد على مقعدته
It was narrated by al-Bukhari, and from this it becomes clear to the questioner that the tawruk is a recommended practice in the final tashahhud in the four-unit and three-unit prayers; due to the aforementioned hadith of Abu Humaid . And Allah knows best. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
