The questioner : We know that tawruk is a valid sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but I do not perform tawruk unless my place of sitting allows me to, out of fear that I will harm the Muslims in their sitting. Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : Tawruk, as the questioner said, is a sunnah, but it is performed in the final tashahhud of every prayer that has two tashahhuds. So it is done in Maghrib, and in Zuhr, and in 'Asr, and in 'Isha'. As for Fajr and every two-rak'ah prayer, there is no tawruk in them. Tawruk is performed in the tashahhud that is followed by the taslim. So if, for example, a person joins the imam in the second rak'ah of the Zuhr prayer, then when the imam performs the final tashahhud, this latecomer will still have one rak'ah remaining. So he does not perform tawruk in this case, because his tawruk, although it is the final tashahhud with respect to his imam, is not the final tashahhud with respect to him. So he does not perform tawruk with the imam. But when he makes up the prayer with the imam, he performs tawruk. Tawruk has three forms: The first form is to raise his right foot, meaning to raise the foot, and to show his left foot from under the shin, so that the left foot is on his left side. The second form is to lower his right and left feet on the right side, with the left foot under the shin of the right foot.
The third form is to lower both feet on the right side, with the left foot between the shin and the thigh of the right foot. This is established in Sahih Muslim. If he does this one time and that one time, it is better. And if he sticks to just one, it is better. But we should clarify an important rule, which is: "When acts of worship are transmitted in various forms, the best is to do them in all these forms, this one time and that one time" for three benefits. The first benefit is acting upon both sunnahs.
The second benefit is that he preserves both sunnahs, because if he acts upon one and abandons the other, he will forget it.
The third benefit is that this is stronger for the presence of the heart, because if he continues with one sunnah, it becomes a habit for him. So if he is present-hearted to do this one time and that one time, that is closer to the presence of the heart. And on this basis, tawruk is done this way one time and that way another time. As for a person not performing tawruk when he is in the row so as not to harm others, this is correct. If there is tightness and a person cannot perform tawruk without harming his brother, then he does not perform tawruk. Here, leaving a sunnah is to avoid harm.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
