The Conditions of Prayer

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 1843 )
Q2: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So, is the prayer of one who shaves his beard accepted or not?
A2: This hadith is narrated through several chains with different wordings from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but it is not established through an authentic chain. It is also narrated from Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas and al-Hasan and a group of others, and the mawquf (stopping at a Companion) is the correct one. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said, after mentioning this hadith as marfu' (traced to the Prophet) (peace and blessings be upon him) and mawquf: “The most correct are the mawquf narrations from Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas and al-Hasan and Qatadah and al-A'mash and others.” Some scholars mentioned that its meaning is defective because it contradicts the authentic texts indicating that prayers erase sins and remove evil deeds. Based on this, it becomes clear that a worshipper shaving his beard does not prevent the validity of his prayer or its acceptance. Rather, he receives the reward of his prayer to the extent that he performed it in its proper, Shari'ah-compliant manner. He is sinful for shaving his beard, and he is a believer in terms of the faith and righteous deeds in him, and an open sinner in terms of the sins in him. It is known from this that prayer only restrains from indecency and wrongdoing when it is established as Allah prescribed in the Book and the Sunnah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

Whoever his prayer does not restrain from indecency and wrongdoing, he does not increase in it from Allah except distance.
