What is done with the severed limbs of a human being

Fatwa number ( 11266 )
Q: If a man is involved in an accident and his hand and leg are severed, but he does not die, what is done with the limb that was cut off from him? Do we wash it, pray over it, and bury it, or what is required of us? This is regarding what happens while he is still alive. As for if we find one of a person's limbs remaining after wild animals have eaten him, and we do not know whether its owner was Muslim or not, what is required of us in this case? Or if we know that its owner was Muslim, what is required of us in both cases? I ask your Eminence to please clarify this well.
A: A limb severed from a living person, for whatever reason, whether by accident, by a blade, or otherwise, is not washed and no prayer is performed over it. Rather, it is wrapped in a cloth and buried in a cemetery, or in good earth far from being desecrated, if the one who finds it does not have a cemetery nearby. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
