Ruling on one who forgets a limb of the ablution

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q29: The questioner says: When I perform wudu, I forget a limb of the wudu, such as rinsing the mouth, or the arm, or the face, and I remember after I have finished. Is it sufficient for me to wash the limb a second time?
A29: If the limbs have not dried, you wash the limb you forgot and everything after it; because the order of the limbs of wudu that Allah the Exalted specified is obligatory by His saying:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the anklesيَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
, so the order is necessary; because Allah arranged them,
this is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu in order, and he is the model to follow (peace and blessings be upon him). He said in the hadith:
He who performed ablution like this ablution of mine and offered two raka`ahs of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, all his previous sins would be expiated.من توضأ نحو وضوئي هذا، ثم صلى ركعتين لا يُحدث فيهما نفسه غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه
Sahih Muslim 226b
or similar to this, his saying:
Like my wuduنَحْوَ وُضُوئي هَذَا
And he arranged his wudu (peace and blessings be upon him) as Allah mentioned in the verse, and he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
I begin with what Allah (has commanded me) to beginأبدأ بما بدأ الله به
Sahih Muslim 1218a
So the order is necessary, so you wash this limb that you forgot, and what comes after it, this is necessary.
