Making up the prayer of the two festivals

Fatwa number ( 2328 )
Q: On the morning of the blessed festival of 'Id al-Fitr, when we arrived at the scene in one of the suburbs of the city of Ta'if , specifically in the Banu Malik district , we found the imam had finished the sermon and was about to pray. Those who had attended for the prayer but were unable to perform it asked one of those present to lead them in prayer. Their number exceeded fifty, so he stood up and prayed two rak'ahs with them while the imam was delivering the sermon. After the prayer, a discussion took place
regarding the validity of the prayer, with some saying the prayer was valid. We ask your eminence to kindly answer and clarify the extent of the validity or invalidity of the prayer. May Allah guide you to all good, and peace be upon you.
A: The prayer of the two festivals is a collective obligation; if a sufficient number of people perform it, the sin is lifted from the rest. In the case asked about: the obligatory act was performed by those who prayed first—those for whom the imam delivered the sermon—and whoever missed it and wishes to make it up, it is recommended for him to do so. He should pray it in its proper form without a sermon following it. This is the view of the imam Malik , al-Shafi'i , Ahmad , al-Nakha'i , and others among the scholars. The basis for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and what is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he missed the festival prayer with the imam, he would gather his family and his clients, and then his client 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Utbah would stand up and pray two rak'ahs with them, saying the takbir in them. It is also permissible for one who is present on the day of the festival while the imam is delivering the sermon to listen to the sermon and then make up the prayer afterwards, so as to combine both benefits. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

When you come to the prayer, walk with calmness and composure. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, make up.
