Fatwa No. ( 13758 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the General President from the Honorable Deputy Dean of Library Affairs in Dammam, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (105) on 12/3/1411 AH. The questioner asked
a question the text of which is: I inform Your Eminence that I am one of the members of the teaching staff at the College of Education, at King Faisal University, and I am currently conducting research on the methods used in teaching female students at the university, and identifying the obstacles and problems facing their academic achievement. Due to the limited capacity of the regular university to provide separate buildings and equipment for both male and female students, and the significant shortage of female teaching staff, the university has provided closed-circuit television systems to transmit lectures to female students via audio and video through television sets within the university. However, this method of teaching is costly, in addition to having many negatives regarding the performance and effectiveness of the teacher on one hand, and the level of academic achievement of the female student on the other hand. Since we are seeking suitable alternatives in light of our customs and traditions, and the teachings of our pure religion, and within the limits of available capabilities, I hope that Your Excellency will kindly answer the following two questions and express the Sharia perspective on them: 1 - What is the Sharia perspective on the presence of the male professor with the female students, directly without a barrier, in the lecture hall, and delivering his lecture, provided that the female student is wearing the Islamic dress and hijab, knowing that seclusion (khalwah) is not present with more than one female student in the hall? 2 - What is the Sharia perspective on teaching male and female students together in one hall, provided that the female student wears the Islamic dress and hijab
and there is a barrier or front seats reserved for the male students, and separate entrances and exits for the female students? I hope to receive Your Excellency's answer as soon as possible, at the address mentioned. May Allah preserve you and care for you.
After the Committee's study of the inquiry, it answered: That it is not permissible; because of the great harms in that, and exposing everyone to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
