The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17264 )
Q1: I am a first-year university student studying electrical engineering at a co-educational university. I know—and there is no doubt about this—that mixing in our Islamic religion is forbidden, and consequently, studying in such universities is forbidden. However, if we leave studying there, given that we are people of commitment, character, and religion, it will be left to the Christians , the worshippers of the cross, and to the pseudo-Muslims who have nothing of Islam except the name. Consequently, we will lose the Muslim doctor upon whom we rely—after Allah—and the Muslim engineer, teacher, and nurse. This means that we will lose a large contingent of the Muslim community, and we will have to rely on those who are not trustworthy, such as open sinners and worshippers of the cross. Please note that there are no non-mixed Islamic scientific universities in our Islamic lands, and if there are, my financial situation does not allow me to study in them. So, if we try as much as possible to avoid mixing, and try as much as possible to lower the gaze and adhere to the matters of our noble religion, is it permissible for us to study in such universities? I am trying, praise be to Allah, to combine religious knowledge with worldly knowledge, and I do not seek them except for the Face of Allah.
A1: It is not permissible for a Muslim student to study in mixed classes between men and women; because of the great trial involved in that. You must seek study in a non-mixed place; to preserve your religion and your honor.[At-Talaq 65:2] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
