The Ruling on the Adhan and Iqamah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 7335 )
Q1: If the mosque is for Jumu'ah and congregation in the town, is it permissible to pray without the adhan and iqamah? And if one leaves out (the prayer is better than sleep) in the adhan because he does not know it, is the prayer valid without a valid legal excuse and without the time having passed? And if he makes the iqamah like the adhan, or says the iqamah only once because he does not know, is it permissible to pray without it and without a valid legal excuse?
A1: The adhan is a collective obligation (fard kifayah) in the town, and so is the iqamah. When intending to pray, one should perform the iqamah before entering the prayer. If one enters the prayer without the adhan and iqamah due to forgetfulness, ignorance, or otherwise, his prayer is valid. Likewise, if he leaves out the phrase "the prayer is better than sleep" in the Fajr adhan, his prayer is valid even if time remains. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
