Fatwa number ( 1629 )
Q: My wife gave birth, and one of my friends refused to enter my home; on the pretext that a woman in post-natal bleeding is not permitted for a person to eat from her hand, and he considers her physically and practically impure, which made me doubt my livelihood. I hope you will inform me, and as far as I know, a woman in post-natal bleeding is prohibited from prayer, fasting, and reciting the Qur'an.
A: All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. As for what follows: A woman does not become ritually impure due to menstruation or post-natal bleeding, and it is not forbidden to eat with her or to touch her in any part other than the private parts. However, it is disliked to touch her between the navel and the knee only, based on what was narrated by Muslim from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Jews used to not eat with a woman when she menstruated among them, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do everything except intercourse
لا، اصنعوا كل شيء إلا النكاحWhen I was menstruating, the Prophet saws would order me to wrap myself up (with an Izar, which is a dress worn below the waist) and would start fondling me.
كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يأمرني فأتزر، فيباشرني وأنا حائضThere is no effect of the prohibition of prayer, fasting, and reciting the Qur'an on her during menstruation or post-natal bleeding on eating with her, or eating what she prepared with her hand. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
