The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 5612 )
Q8: Many of the worshippers in our area stay in the mosques after performing the Maghrib prayer without leaving; they wait for the adhan for the Isha prayer. During this waiting time, some of them converse with others about worldly matters while they are in the mosque, and some even bring a radio to the mosque to listen to worldly news. Please clarify for us whether there is any harm in this action or not?
A8: Mosques were built for the worship of Allah alone, including prayer, recitation of the Qur'an, studying knowledge, preaching, reminding people of Allah, and consulting about what is right, as well as similar acts of drawing near to Him. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nur 24:36-38] They were not built to be places for amusement, idle talk, and gossip. Muslims should fill the mosques with what they were built for and protect them from worldly matters, except for what is minimal.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings (37) [Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about - (38) That Allah may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty
