Fatwa No. ( 8687 ):
Q: I heard the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): and I have some questions: (a) What is the chain of narration (sanad) and the correct text of this hadith, and who is its narrator? (b) Mention these righteous people, if possible. (c) What is the meaning of: "the affairs of religion are set right," when we left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upon the clear, straight path? (d) How can one identify them? (e) How authentic is the statement that they come at the beginning of the twelfth year of every Hijri century?
A: First:This hadith was narrated byAbu Dawudin his Sunan fromSulayman ibn Dawud al-Muhriwho said: "It was reported to us by'Abd Allah ibn Wahbwho said: "It was reported to me bySa'id ibn Abi AyyubfromSharahil ibn Yazid al-Mu'afirifromAbu 'UqlamahfromAbu Hurayrah, as far as I know, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4291Sahih (Al-Albani) . Second: This hadith is authentic, and all of its narrators are trustworthy.Third and Fourth: The meaning of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):: That whenever a large number of people deviate from the path of the religion—which Allah has perfected for His servants, completed His favor upon them, and chosen for them as a religion—He sends to them scholars, or a scholar
who is well-versed in Islam, and a righteous caller who shows people the Book of Allah and the established Sunnah of His Messenger, keeps them away from religious innovations, warns them of newly invented matters, and turns them back from their deviation to the straight path: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He called this renewal for the community, not for the religion which Allah legislated and completed, for change, weakness, and deviation occur upon the community time after time, whereas Islam itself is preserved by the preservation of the Book of Allah the Exalted and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which explains it. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Hijr 15:9] . Fifth: The hadith does not state that these reformers come at the beginning of the twelfth year, but rather that they come, by the will and wisdom of Allah, at the beginning of every hundred years, which is the Hijri century; for that is the common usage among Muslims in that time. This is a favor from Allah and a mercy from Him to His servants, and an establishment of the argument against them so that no one has an excuse after the message has been delivered and explained. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
