It is reported in the hadith that Allah sends a renewer for this Ummah at the beginning of every hundred years; is this correct? And what is the nature of this renewal?

Eid Abbasi : It is reported that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) sends a renewer for this Ummah at the beginning of every Hijri century; is this correct in the first place? And if it is correct, what is the nature of the renewal that takes place at the hands of this renewer?

The Shaykh : The hadith is valid, and renewal comes in different types; this is the correct interpretation of the hadith. Islam needs renewal whenever a period of time, long or short, has passed. The renewal of Islam occurs from multiple aspects, the most important of which are:
Renewing its correct concepts; because Muslims deviate over time from the correct understanding of Islam as Book and Sunnah. The greatest renewal is this renewer who comes to the Muslims with the correct concepts that our righteous Salaf held regarding the texts of the Book and the Sunnah. Part of this most important renewal is purifying the Sunnah from what has entered it that is not part of it. Then he calls Muslims to rely on this correct Sunnah, along with the Qur'an, and with that correct explanation of each of them that our righteous Salaf held. This renewal is the most important renewal, and the standing of the Muslims, the standing of Islamic movements, all Islamic calls, and all Islamic parties will not be established unless they are built upon this authentic renewal.
Renewing the Sunnah by distinguishing what is not part of it and setting it aside, and renewing the correct concepts of the texts of the Book and the Sunnah to call Muslims to the concepts that our righteous Salaf held. But in reality, this is not sufficient. There must be renewal, for example, in other sciences that the development of scientific and social life requires some people to direct toward renewing. We give an example of this, for instance, the science of language. This science must be renewed and brought closer to people, even the Arabs themselves who have strayed, a little or a lot, from their language due to the foreign influence that has crept into them. Therefore, this science must be renewed. Likewise, it is said that the educational and psychological aspects must be renewed, and Muslims must be directed to what aligns, also, with the Book and the Sunnah in all these aspects. There is no doubt that an individual, or even a group, cannot undertake all these efforts and renewals. Therefore, some scholars mentioned, as an example of the types of renewal, "Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi" among the renewers; even though the man was not famous for knowledge, but because he renewed Islamic life by encouraging them to jihad, and compelled them to fight the enemies and expel them from the lands after they had occupied them for many long years, he was considered among the renewers.
Therefore, renewal is not confined to one aspect to the exclusion of another; as long as life is renewed, the sciences must also be renewed, and these sciences must proceed according to the correct Book and Sunnah and in accordance with the concept that our righteous Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them) held.
