The Hadith: The Most Hated of What Is Lawful to Allah Is Divorce

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 11005 ):
Q2: How authentic is the hadith:
The most hated of permissible things to Allah is divorce.أبغض الحلال إلى الله الطلاق
Sunan Ibn Majah 2018Sahih (Darussalam)
; because some weaken it and say: it is mursal (missing the Companion link), and so is its text. They say: Does Allah hate something and make it lawful? For Allah is not compelled to do anything?

Volume 2: It is reported in [Mukhtasar al-Sunan] by Abu Dawud , from Muharib ibn Dathar from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The most hated of what is lawful to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is divorceأبغض الحلال إلى الله عز وجل الطلاق
, said al-Mundhiri : and it was also reported by Ibn Majah , and the well-known version is the mursal (missing the Companion link), which is strange (gharib). And al-Bayhaqi said: and in the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar it is connected (mawsul), but I do not think it is preserved. And in a narration from Muharib ibn Dathar , he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah did not make anything lawful more abominable to Him than divorce.ما أحل الله شيئًا أبغض إليه من الطلاق
Sunan Abi Dawud 2177Da'if (Al-Albani)
and this is mursal. Said Ibn al-Qayyim : and al-Daraqutni narrated from the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah did not make anything lawful more abominable to Him than divorce.ما أحل الله شيئًا أبغض إليه من الطلاق
Sunan Abi Dawud 2177Da'if (Al-Albani)
, and in it is Humayd ibn Malik , and he is weak. And al-Munawi transmitted in [Fayd al-Qadir]: that Ibn Hajar said: and he preferred
Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni the mursal (missing the Companion link) in the hadith:
The most hated of permissible things to Allah is divorce.أبغض الحلال إلى الله الطلاق
Sunan Ibn Majah 2018Sahih (Darussalam)
. And Ibn al-Jawzi included it in [al-'Ilal] with the chain of Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah , and he weakened it due to 'Abd Allah al-Wasafi , and said Yahya : it is of no value, and said al-Nasa'i : he is abandoned (in narration), but Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with a connected, authentic chain, from Ma'rif ibn Wasil from Muharib ibn Dathar from Ibn 'Umar , traced to the Prophet (marfu'), and it does not contain 'Abd Allah ibn al-Walid al-Wasafi , whom Ibn al-Jawzi cited as a defect. And by this, the authenticity of the hadith as connected (mawsul) rather than mursal becomes clear to you, and the mursal version would then be a support for the connected version, not a defect in it. As for its text, there is no anomaly in it; because there is no contradiction in making divorce permissible and disliking it; for Allah, the Wise and All-Knowing, made it permissible for His servants when they have need of it, and He disliked it for them when they have no need of it. And from this category is His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The parts of land dearest to Allah are its mosques, and the parts most hateful to Allah are markets.أحب البلاد إلى الله مساجدها، وأبغض البلاد إلى الله أسواقها
Sahih Muslim 671
, which the Imam Muslim included in his Sahih. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
