Exegesis of Verse 29 of Surat al-Kahf

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 9880 ):
Q8: What is the correct exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve."وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ
[Al-Kahf 18:29]
?

A8: The correct exegesis of this is: that Allah the Exalted (Glorified and Exalted is He) says to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): And say, O Muhammad, to these people—those whose hearts We have caused to neglect Our remembrance and who followed their desires—O mankind, this which I recite to you is the truth that was revealed to me from your Lord, and to Him belongs success and failure, and in His hand is guidance and misguidance. He guides whom He wills from you to the right path, so they believe, and He misguides whom He wills from the guidance, so they disbelieve. I have no part in that, and I am not one who drives away anyone who follows the truth and believes in Allah and in what was revealed to me because of your desires. If you wish, believe, and if you wish, disbelieve. If you disbelieve, Allah has prepared for you, for your disbelief in Him, a Fire whose canopy surrounds you. And if you believe in Him and act in obedience to Him, then for you is what He (Glorified and Exalted is He) has described for the people of His obedience. And it is not
the intent of this that Allah the Exalted permits disbelief to whom He wills and faith to whom He wills; rather, it is a threat and a warning. This is indicated by what He mentioned after this in the conclusion of this verse, where He threatens them with severe punishment, and by what came in the two verses following it, which bring good news to the believers of the Gardens of bliss. Refer to [the Tafsir of Imam Ibn Jarir al-Tabari ] (may Allah have mercy on him) for this verse and the two verses following it in Surat al-Kahf, or to [the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir ] for them, and in them is sufficiency. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
