Abandoning a Surah of the Qur'an

Fatwa No. ( 1349 ):
Q: It is stated that the questioner mentions: that he reads the Qur'an from Surat al-Fatihah to the end of Surat al-Isra, and he is in good health. But when he begins to read Surat al-Kahf, he falls ill and loses consciousness and does not regain consciousness until after approximately seven hours. And when he regains consciousness, he reads Surat Maryam up to Surat al-Nas, and nothing befalls him except from reading Surat al-Kahf; therefore, he has left reading it for a period of three years. He asks whether there is sin upon him for abandoning it, or is it permissible for him to leave it, and how can he resolve his problem?
A: The Qur'an is the speech of Allah the Exalted, containing guidance, light, and healing for what is in the breasts. Whoever reads it with sincerity, reflects on its verses, and acts according to its rulings, Allah grants him insight in his religion and strength in his certainty, and repels from him the plotting of the devils. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge for himself when sleeping by reading the three surahs:[Al-Ikhlas 112:1] , and [Al-Falaq 113:1] , and [An-Nas 114:1] , reading them three times, and blowing into his palms after each time and wiping with them his face and as much of his body as he could. It is prescribed for his Ummah to read the Verse of the Throne when a Muslim takes to his bed; so that this serves as protection for him from the devil until morning. He approved of one who was bitten by a scorpion among the chiefs of the disbelievers seeking healing through recitation of al-Fatihah, and in this was his healing. And it is prescribed for his Ummah to seek healing through the Qur'an in general. In summary, the entire Qur'an is good, blessing, and healing, and good does not bring about evil, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us. Rather, a person is afflicted from before him, either due to his lack of sincerity or his poor application. Accordingly, what the questioner mentioned about being afflicted with illness or fainting when reciting Surat al-Kahf is either an illusion, in which case he should fear Allah and abandon illusions, or it is a reality, in which case it is an affliction from the foolish jinn, and a whispering from the devil who plots against the reader of the Qur'an in general and the reader of a surah from it, to make him abandon reading it or abandon reading the surah that afflicted him when he recited it. If he abandons reading the surahs, for example, the devil has overcome him and achieved his desire, and increases his plotting against him until he takes control of him and he becomes one of the brothers of the devils who extend them in error, then
they do not stop. The path of salvation from that is seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed devil with sincerity and truthfulness in the language of seeking refuge in Allah and fleeing to Him, so that He protects him from the devils, and thereby he becomes one of the righteous, not one of the brothers of the devils. And Allah has guided us to that in the generality of His saying:[Al-A'raf 7:200-202] . So you, O questioner: should seek refuge in Allah from the devil at the beginning of reading the Qur'an in general, with sincerity, humility of heart, and truthfulness in seeking refuge in Allah. Do not abandon Surat al-Kahf or any other surah because of what befell you, for opposing the devil and what he casts into the heart of weakness, whispers, and illusions is a suppression of him and a frustration of his plotting. And be glad that Allah is with you, for Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

(200) And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing. (201) Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight. (202) But their brothers - the devils increase them in error; then they do not stop short.
