The Sale of Yusuf (peace be upon him)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 5285 ): Q: After reviewing [Tafsir al-Qur'an] by Ibn Kathir, and also al-Jalalayn, I found in the tafsir of Surah Yusuf that the brothers of Yusuf sold him, but there is a large group of Muslims here who contradict this and indicate that the brothers of Yusuf did not sell him. I ask for clarification of the truth, and also for a recommendation of a book that clarifies this story according to the truth so that I may purchase it. May you be greatly rewarded and respected, and may Allah make you a storehouse for the religion and for the Muslims.
A: The correct view in the interpretation of this verse is that the caravan who found Yusuf (peace be upon him) in the well are the ones who sold him—as understood from the context and the apparent meaning of the story, and this is the opinion of Qatadah and others—not his brothers. This opinion has been mentioned by a number of mufassirun (commentators), including al-Qurtubi , Ibn al-Jawzi , Ibn Kathir , Ibn Jarir , and others. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
