The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 6150 ):
Q4: What is the interpretation of "the marked angels" mentioned in verse ( 125 ) of Surat al-Imran?
A4 : Ibn Jarir and Ibn Kathir , along with other exegetes, have discussed the meaning of "the marked angels." Ibn Jarir mentioned two readings of "musawwimin" (marked)
Opening the waw and kasrah-ing it, and he preferred the reading with the kasrah. This is the text of his choice: he said, “The reading that is more correct in this matter is the reading of the one who reads with the kasrah of the (waw); because the reports are widespread from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those among them who engaged in interpretation, as well as from the Tabi'un after them, that it was the angels who marked themselves, without attributing their marking to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) or to any other of His creation... ” The intended quote ends here. After mentioning Ibn Jarir a number of opinions that clarify the signs that became distinctive for them, he said: Abu Ja'far said: “These reports, some of which we have mentioned from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which he said to his Companions:Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 37:132, and the statement of Abu Usayd : “The angels came out wearing yellow turbans which they placed between their shoulders.” And the statement of some of them: “(Marked) means identified.” All of this indicates the correctness of the reading we chose in this matter, and that the marking was done by the angels themselves, in the manner we mentioned previously regarding this. The quote ends here. We advise you to refer to the words of Ibn Jarir and Ibn Kathir and others regarding the two verses for further benefit. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
