Exegesis of verses from Surat al-Furqan, the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((Blessed is He Who placed in the sky constellations and placed therein a lamp and a shining moon

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the righteous, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
This is the fifty-ninth of the monthly gatherings that take place on the night of Saturday to Sunday, the third of every month. And this night is the night of Sunday, the twenty-first of the month of Jumada al-Akhirah, 1419 AH. I ask Allah the Exalted to benefit me and you with what He has taught us, and to increase us in knowledge, and to make us among the righteous and the reformers, for He is capable of all things. On this night, we will begin with the exegesis of the end of Surat al-Furqan, from the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He:
Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.
[Al-Furqan 25:61]
. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) praises Himself with these great creations, saying:
Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars
[Al-Furqan 25:61]
meaning: He is Exalted and Magnificent, and blessing has settled in His names and His speech (Mighty and Majestic). As Allah the Exalted said:
a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its
[Sad 38:29]
And in the supplication of opening the prayer, we say in the prayer:
Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You, and blessed is Your name
meaning: that blessing is attained by Your name. For this reason, two men slaughter two sacrificial animals: one did not mention the name of Allah over his sacrifice, and the other did mention it. The first man's sacrifice is forbidden and has no blessing in it. And the second man's sacrifice, over which he mentioned the name, is lawful and has blessing in it. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Blessed, Exalted, and Magnificent: the blessing is in His names, the blessing is in His attributes, the blessing is in His speech (Exalted and Majestic is He).
who has placed in the sky great stars
[Al-Furqan 25:61]
: the plural of برج (constellation), and they are the high stars. These stars that we see and observe at night are constellations, some higher than others. And they are twelve constellations. Three for the summer, three for the winter, three for the autumn, and three for the spring. So the total is twelve constellations, high stars. Look at these stars, how you see them with this size, and between you and them are great distances that no one knows except Allah (Mighty and Majestic), or those whom Allah has informed.
and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.
[Al-Furqan 25:61]
The lamp: the sun, and the shining moon: the moon. And the mother is the sun, because the light of the moon is derived from the light of the sun. For this reason, when it approaches it, its light weakens. When the moon approaches the sun, its light weakens. Why? Because it weakens the opposition between it and the sun, and its light is acquired from the sun. So when it gets close to it, the opposition decreases and the light decreases. And when it moves away from it and it is in the east and the sun is in the west, or vice versa, it fills with light. And for that reason, you find the moon in the nights of the waxing gibbous, where is its position relative to the sun? It is in the east at the beginning of the night and the sun is in the west. At the end of the night, it is in the west and the sun is in the east, and its light is full, because it completes its opposition with the sun. For this reason, Allah named the sun a lamp and the moon a light.
and a shining moon وقمرا منيرا
