Q: Please, my dear Shaykh: A religious discussion has arisen between me and my Muslim brothers regarding the religion of Islam. It is that some Muslims in Ghana honor the holidays of the Jews and the Christians and neglect their own holidays to the extent that when the time for the festival of the Jews and the Christians comes, they close the Islamic schools on the occasion of their festival, but when the festival of the Muslims comes, they do not close the Islamic schools. They say: If you follow the holidays of the Jews and the Christians , they will enter the religion of Islam. My dear Shaykh, you must explain to us whether their action is correct in the religion or not?
A: First: It is the Sunnah to display the Islamic religious rites among the Muslims, and neglecting to display them is contrary to the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is established
from him that he said:Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i) This is the hadith. Second: It is not permissible for a Muslim to participate in the festivals of the disbelievers, to display joy and happiness on this occasion, and to suspend work, whether religious or worldly; because this is imitating the enemies of Allah, which is forbidden, and cooperating with them in falsehood. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani) , and Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says: [Al-Ma'idah 5:2] . We advise you to refer to the book [Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim] by the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), for it is very beneficial in this matter. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

عليكم بسنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديين، تمسكوا بها، وعضو ا عليها بالنواجذHe who copies any people is one of them.
من تشبه بقوم فهو منهمAnd cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ
