The third question of Fatwa No. ( 7066 ):
Q3: Is it authentic that it is narrated from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq that he said: "I wish Abu Bakr were a tree that a woodcutter's axe cut down"?
Volume 3: It is not established from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said this, as far as we know. However, Ahmad narrated in [al-Zuhd] from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni who said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said: "I wish I were a hair on the side of a believing servant." This report is also not authentic, because Abu 'Imran al-Jawni did not meet Abu Bakr al-Siddiq . He also narrated from al-Hasan who said: Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, I wish I were this tree, to be eaten and cut down." This report is not
authentic; because al-Hasan did not meet Abu Bakr al-Siddiq . And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
