The second question of Fatwa No. ( 2450 )
Q2: Is it permissible to divide the Qur'an meaning: when reciting it; because of the alteration of His words that this entails, including additions and omissions, and this is what we have witnessed in some regions of the Maghreb — I say — is that permissible?
A2: We know of nothing indicating the division of the Qur'an as printed in the margins of the mushafs that are in people's hands today. What is reported from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding this is what was narrated by Aws ibn Hudhayfah who said: (I asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): How do you divide the Qur'an? They said: Three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, and the part of the final section alone, and that it is
Three: al-Baqarah, Aal 'Imran, and al-Nisa; Five: al-Ma'idah, al-An'am, al-A'raf, al-Anfal, and al-Bara'ah; Seven: Yunus, Hud, Yusuf, al-Ra'd, Ibrahim, al-Hijr, and al-Nahl; Nine: al-Isra, al-Kahf, Maryam, Ta-Ha, al-Anbiya, al-Hajj, al-Mu'minun, al-Nur, and al-Furqan; Eleven: al-Shu'ara, al-Naml, al-Qasas, al-'Ankabut, al-Rum, Luqman, al-Sajdah, al-Ahzab, Saba, Fatir, and Ya-Sin; Thirteen: al-Saffat, Sad, al-Zumar, Ghafir, Ham al-Sajdah, Ham 'Asad, al-Zukhruf, al-Dukhan, al-Jathiyah, al-Ahqaf, al-Qital, al-Fath, and al-Hujurat; then after that, the part of the final section, the first of which is Qaf). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
