Fatwa No. ( 10914 ):

Q: For more than a year, I have been in a terrible psychological and intellectual struggle. The culmination of this struggle was that I decided to commit suicide for the reasons I will mention later. I possess the strength, ability, and courage to proceed with suicide, but I fear that doing so will anger Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and cause me to ruin my ending with my own hand. As for the reasons, they combine worldly and hereafter causes. Since I was young, I have always been an unlucky person in the language of the worldly people. When I finished my intermediate studies, my family’s financial circumstances did not help me complete my university education, unlike my brothers, sisters, and all my friends without exception. Six years ago, I packed my bags and left Egypt , my country, hoping that Allah would compensate me with good. But what is astonishing is that in six years of
hard work, moving from one country to another, I have not saved enough to even complete half of my religion, which is marriage. I have always been adorned with patience, for Allah is with the patient. But I began to collapse psychologically, and my patience began to run out. I can no longer bear being a person between four walls, moving with me wherever I go, and a psychological war taking place every day inside my mind and body. I have restrained myself from committing sin and from the path of Satan, but I am no longer myself. I fear that Satan will play with me, and that my hand will reach for haram wealth, or that I will commit a haram act such as zina, may Allah protect us from that. I have always wished to die a noble, clean person; therefore, I decided to commit suicide and preferred death to living until the moment comes when I do what angers Allah. Is this act halal, permissible, or haram? Allah knows that this is for His sake (Glorified and Exalted is He). May Allah reward you with good, protect you, and guide your steps. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. I hope that your response, may Allah honor you, will be free from emotion and follow what Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) brought and what came in the Sunnah of His beloved, the Chosen one (peace and blessings be upon him)?

A: It is not permissible for you to proceed with the crime of suicide; for killing the self is forbidden and a major among the major sins. Allah the Exalted said:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.وَلاَ تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا
[An-Nisa 4:29]
, and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Your blood, your properties, and your honor are sacred to one anotherإن دماءكم وأموالكم وأعراضكم عليكم حرام
Sahih al-Bukhari 1739
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever kills himself with something will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrectionمن قتل نفسه في شيء عذب به يوم القيامة
agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. What has occurred in your heart, preferring that death come to you while you have not done what angers Allah over remaining in life, is from the whispering of Satan. You must be cautious of it, seek refuge in Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) from Satan, and increase in supplication and imploring Him to protect you from his whispers. Strive to do acts of obedience and what brings you closer to Allah, avoid the prohibitions of Allah and bad companions, and be patient with what has befallen you, so that Allah may guide you to the path of truth, keep you away from the path of misguidance, and guide everyone to what He loves and is pleased with. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
