The Prohibition of Suicide and Wishing for Death

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Her final question is that she asks, saying: I read in the book *Al-Naseehah fi al-Ad'iyyah al-Sahihah* (Advice in Authentic Supplications) regarding Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you must wish for death because he is afflicted by evil circumstances, but if he cannot help doing so he should say, ‘O God, give me life as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me.’
Mishkat al-Masabih 1600
It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari, and Muslim. The question is: Does this supplication mean turning away from suicide, and at what time in the prayer can such a supplication be answered? And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah?
Answer: Yes, it is not permissible for her to commit suicide, nor is it permissible for anyone else to commit suicide due to a hardship that befalls them. It is not permissible for a Muslim man or woman to commit suicide due to a hardship that befalls him, such as illness, injuries, harassment, poverty, or the like. Rather, it is obligatory to be patient, and there is no harm in this supplication. A person may say in his prayer or otherwise:
O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5671
This is from the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), established from the narration of al-Nasa'i from 'Amir ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with these supplications: O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over all creation, keep me alive as long as You know life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know death is better for me.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:258
He mentioned other supplications as well.
The point is: Among the supplications of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is:
O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over all creation, keep me alive as long as You know life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know death is better for me.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:258
And the hadith of Anas ibn Malik that the questioner mentioned was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in the two Sahihs. It is a great hadith, and it indicates that there is no harm in asking this:
O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5671
If one supplicates with this supplication in prostration, or at the end of the prayer before the closing salam, it is good; because supplication is answered in prostration, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
Likewise, supplication at the end of the prayer is supplication in its proper place. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it when he taught his companions the tashahhud. He said to them after teaching them the testimony:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.
Bulugh al-Maram 2:203
After teaching them the tashahhud:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.
Bulugh al-Maram 2:203
So the believer supplicates at the end of the prayer with whatever good supplications Allah has made easy for him, and likewise in prostration. Yes.
