What is the ruling on suicide operations? And how is the person who commits suicide judged after his death?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The answer is that these suicide operations have two forms. In my opinion, the form that is permissible does not exist today, unless there is something we do not know, which is that the suicide bomber resorted to suicide in a certain way to kill as many of the enemies of Allah as possible, and that his launch of this suicide operation was in execution of the order of the supreme commander who knows what the Muslim community needs in terms of sacrifice. This is permissible; but for a Muslim to resort to a suicide operation purely on his own opinion and independent legal reasoning, this is not permissible. Is the answer clear?

The questioner : I mean, those who committed suicide by jumping from the rooftops after the death of the singer 'Abd al-Halim. Did the one who committed suicide, the singer who died by suicide, will he abide in the Fire forever?

The Shaykh : His case is left to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This person must be studied anatomically during his lifetime.

The questioner : After his death, of course?

The Shaykh : Yes, just so that we can say what the outcome of his case is, he must be studied before his death. If we find what confirms that his suicide was due to dissatisfaction with the divine decree and destiny, then he is in the Fire, and what an evil resting place. But if it was a sudden event that surprised him and changed his opinion which he was living and practicing at that time, we leave his case to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because in such delicate matters, it is very difficult for a person to express a firm and definitive opinion. And I remind you of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There was among those before you a man who had never done any good. When death approached him, he gathered his children around him and said, "What kind of father was I to you?" They said, "The best father." He said, "I am a sinner with my Lord, and if Allah has power over me — he began to disbelieve now — if Allah has power over me, He will punish me with a severe punishment. So when I die, burn me with fire, then scatter half of me in the wind and half in the sea." When he died, they burned him with fire and scattered half of him in the raging wind and the other half in the surging sea. Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said to his particles: "Be so-and-so," and he became a sound human being. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said, "O My servant, what led you to do what you did?" He said, "Your fear." He said, "I have forgiven you."
In our material scale, we say this is what our Lord meant by His saying:
And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, "Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?" وضرب لنا مثلا ونسي خلقه قال من يحيي العظام وهي رميم
[Ya-Sin 36:78]
and so on. This was a man who imagined that if he were burned by fire and became ash, that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) would be unable to restore him as he was. And therefore he left this unjust bequest, of which we cannot imagine anything deeper in injustice and oppression, but nevertheless his position

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, the divine position was contrary to our human scales, because He knew that this state had settled in the heart of this man and veiled him from the belief he was living, which is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Able to do all things. And therefore he said, "Your fear."

The questioner : I mean, did he believe?

The Shaykh : Yes, he believed, but this fear covered him and inspired him with this thing, of which we cannot imagine what you heard, so the outcome of his case was that Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) forgave him.

The questioner : Does this not count as despair?

The Shaykh : Despair?

The questioner : Despair from the mercy of Allah?

The Shaykh : I do not think so; he acknowledges that he is a sinner with his Lord and that he deserves for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to punish him.
